Introduction/Overview
Somali Charity for Relief and Development (SCRD) is a newly established non-governmental organization (NGO) with a mission to empower Somali communities through sustainable development, humanitarian assistance, and advocacy. Founded in 2024 in Mogadishu, SCRD was created in response to the urgent need for localized, community-driven interventions in areas affected by poverty, conflict, and limited access to essential services.
With Somalia facing severe socio-economic challenges, including high displacement rates, food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to education, SCRD aims to fill critical service gaps while ensuring long-term resilience and self-sufficiency for affected communities.
At this early stage, SCRD is focused on establishing key partnerships, mobilizing resources, and setting up pilot programs in priority sectors such as healthcare, education, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), economic empowerment, and human rights advocacy.
We strongly believe that true development begins with empowering local populations. By creating community-led solutions and fostering local ownership, SCRD ensures that the impact of its programs is sustainable and deeply rooted in community priorities.
Our work is guided by core values of equity, accountability, and transparency, ensuring that all our interventions are ethical, culturally appropriate, and aligned with international development best practices.
Through collaborative partnerships with stakeholders, SCRD is positioning itself as a trusted, locally led organization that will serve as a beacon of hope and transformation for Somali communities.
History and Background
SCRD was founded in 2024 in Mogadishu by a group of development professionals, social activists, and humanitarian workers who recognized the need for a locally led, community-driven approach to sustainable development in Somalia.
While Somalia has received extensive humanitarian aid from international organizations, many development programs have lacked long-term sustainability due to limited community involvement and reliance on external funding. SCRD was established to bridge this gap by creating solutions that are deeply rooted in local expertise and community leadership.
As a new organization, SCRD is currently in the process of:
- Building institutional capacity by establishing internal policies, recruiting key staff, and securing funding.
- Forming strategic partnerships with government agencies, local NGOs, and international development organizations.
- Developing pilot projects to assess the most urgent community needs and test effective interventions.
SCRD is committed to growing into a leading humanitarian and development organization that provides high-impact, sustainable solutions to Somalia’s most pressing social and economic challenges.
